The Initiative

The Original 33 were the first Black legislators elected in the state of Georgia during the Reconstruction Era. Elected in 1868 to the Georgia General Assembly, the men were forcibly expelled from office when white Democrats conspired with some white Republicans to have them removed.

Under the leadership of Mamie Hillman, the Founder and Director of the Greene County African American Museum in Greensboro, Georgia, this initiative seeks to tell the individual and collective stories of these men.
